9,000% dividend! Record payout from TMB

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/banking/9000-dividend-record-payout-from-tmb/article5602547.ece

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) has declared an interim dividend of 9,000 per cent.
That’s actually Rs 900 per share of Rs 10 each, for the fiscal ending March 2014.
The board of this Tuticorin-headquartered bank took a decision to this effect at a meeting held on January 18.
Bank sources said this would translate into an outgo of Rs 25.6 crore (unchanged from last year).
The 9,000 per cent interim dividend is said to be the highest in the banking industry and this is the second year in a row that the bank has declared such a high dividend. It may be recalled that the bank’s board had approved a dividend of Rs 750 per share for 2008-09 and Rs 1,000 per share the following year, but could not make the payment as the annual general meetings for 2009-10 and 2010-11 were not held due to legal issues.
Bank sources said TMB’s shares continue to trade at between Rs 60,000 and Rs 65,000 a share in the informal market.

SIB expects to cross over Rs 1 lakh cr business this fiscal

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/banking/sib-expects-to-cross-over-rs-1-lakh-cr-business-this-fiscal/article4587995.ece

Private sector lender South Indian Bank Limited would be in a position to cross over Rs 1 lakh crore business in the current fiscal, said a top bank official.
The Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr V A Joseph told PTI that total business for fiscal 2013 had crossed over Rs 76,000 crore as against the target of Rs 75,000 crore.
SIB expects to increase its branches up to 800 and 1000 ATMs this fiscal with a total business of Rs 1 lakh crore, he added.
Joseph said SIB had made good strides in performance in the past eight years despite all odds and the global economic downturn.
SIB was forced to skip the dividend for fiscal 2004-2005.
Net profit went up from Rs 50 crore in 2006 to Rs 402.66 crore in 2012 while payment of dividend increased from 18 per cent in 2006 to 60 per cent in 2012.
To a query on hike in dividend for fiscal 2013, he said under no circumstance would it be less than 60 per cent as the performance audit was not yet over.
He said net profits for fiscal 2013 was likely to be over Rs 500 crore, a record profit in the 85-year old history of SIB. The target for the fiscal was to increase the number of branches to 750 and 750 ATMs and a business turnover of Rs 75000 crore.
Joseph said that in the past eight years SIB had purchased property worth several crores of rupees in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore and Kochi.

SBT net grows 31% on higher interest income

State Bank of Travancore (SBT) posted a net profit of Rs 132 crore in the third quarter of the current fiscal.
This represented a 31 per cent jump over the net profit of Rs 101 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
Speaking to Business Line, P. Nandakumaran, Managing Director, SBT, attributed the good performance to an overall improvement in the operational scheme of things. It also marked reversal of a trend in which the cost of deposits had been weighing down the overall performance. The bank had managed the challenge on this front after NRI deposits, which accounted for 24 per cent, were set free last year. Adequate provisioning has been made not only for non-performing assets (Rs 245 crore this quarter) but also for restructured assets.
“Growth in advances resulting in a higher net interest income also aided in achieving a growth in the net profit,” Nandakumaran said.
The net interest income moved up from Rs 1,325 crore to Rs 1,511 crore, a year-on-year growth of 14.04 per cent.
Net interest margin (NIM) stood at 2.50 per cent (2.63 per cent).
The net operating income rose from Rs 1,799 crore to Rs 1,975 crore, a growth of 9.75 per cent.
The capital to risk weighted assets ratio (CRAR) stood at 11.40 per cent (under Basel II framework) against a regulatory minimum of nine per cent. Gross net performing assets (NPAs) grew to 3.04 per cent from 2.82 per cent while net NPAs stood at 1.83 per cent against 1.64 per cent.
Total business crossed Rs 1.45 lakh-crore mark and stood at Rs 1.46 lakh crore as at the end of December, 2012.

Bank deposits up 10%, credit rises 6% in first half

Credit (loans) growth slowed in the first half of the financial year while deposits swelled, widening the gap between growth in bank deposits and outstanding loans. According to a Reserve Bank of India data, bank deposits grew 10 per cent or Rs 6 lakh crore. Loans grew six per cent or Rs 2.73 lakh crore.

Deposits had grown 9.7 per cent and credit seven per cent during the same period in the last financial year.

RBI had indicated deposits would grow 16 per cent and credit 17 per cent by the end of the current financial year.

According to bankers and experts, the central bank is likely to rework the projections in the next credit policy review on October 30.

However, some bankers said loans would pick up in the second half of the financial year thanks to the upcoming festival season. To take advantage of the festive season, most banks, including the State Bank of India and ICICI Bank, have lowered lending rates to attract customers.

Krishna Kumar, managing director of SBI, had recently said the retail segment would grow 18-20 per cent but might not be able to compensate for the slow growth in corporate credit.
“We saw doubling of applicants (per day) for home loans. There is good growth in auto loan segments, too,” said Kumar, adding the SBI was receiving 800-1,000 auto loan applications every day.

The “uncertainty” caused by the resignation of one of the statutory auditors of Dhanlaxmi Bank and “concerns over the reported numbers” of financial performance of the first quarter, has led rating agency ICRA to place the bank on ‘rating watch with negative implications’.

The bank reported a net loss of Rs 12 crore for the April-June quarter of 2012-13, over a net loss of Rs 86.51 crore in the previous quarter.

Muted business growth, pressure on net interest margins

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/banking/article3731292.ece

Quarterly GDP growth slided all through the four quarters of 2011-12 to touch a nine-year low of 5.3 per cent in the January-March quarter. The growth concerns prompted the RBI to reduce the benchmark repo rate by 50 basis points in its Annual Policy statement on April 17, 2012.
The transmission of the reduction in policy rates to the deposit and lending rates, however, was asymmetric. While modal base rate of commercial banks declined by 25 bps, the modal deposit rate declined by only 2 bps in the June quarter.
The stickiness in deposit rates reflects interplay of factors such as tight liquidity and high inflation in Q1 of 2012-13.
It may be noted that growth in both deposits and advances for the banking system at 13.4 per cent and 16.5 per cent in Q1 has been below the RBI’s indicative projection of 16 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively, for 2012-13.
